Lead Software Engineer (Java / Angular)

About Us

We are an established maritime company operating a mixed fleet across several vessel types, with software built in-house. We are now modernizing that platform: tightening how our applications work with our ERP and databases, and beginning to explore where AI can genuinely help our operations.

The Role

In this hands-on Lead position, you will oversee our complete in-house application lifecycle—spanning system architecture, development, deployment, and ongoing production management. You will balance technical execution with strategy by writing high-impact code, defining key architectural standards, and guiding our engineering team.

What You Will Do

• Build & Scale the platform: Design, develop, and maintain high-performance Java web applications and APIs, taking features from initial design to production release.


• Drive the End-to-End Architecture: Drive technical strategy across our Angular front end, Java backend services, IAM, and multi-database integration layer. Define architectural standards and maintain clear system documentation.


• Integrate Core Enterprise Workflows: Connect in-house applications with our core Danaos ERP platform, ensuring seamless and reliable cross-system data flows.


• Optimize the Data Layer: Write and review complex SQL and PL/SQL, tune performance-critical queries, and design robust data models across Oracle and PostgreSQL environments.


• Drive Deployment & Operations: Define release topologies across Dev, Staging, and Production—handling configuration, network/firewall coordination, and production troubleshooting.


• Mentor & Guide the Team: Conduct thorough code reviews, provide technical guidance to mid-level engineers, and bridge the gap between business stakeholders and production-ready technical plans.


• Explore On-Premise Applied AI (~10–20% of the role): Research, prototype, and implement secure AI/ML solutions running directly on our internal infrastructure to ensure complete data privacy and control.

What We Are Looking For

• 8+ years of professional software development in enterprise environments.


• Strong Java (17+) with Spring Boot and Hibernate, and solid REST API and design fundamentals.


• Practical expertise in Angular or another modern SPA framework, alongside the adaptability to bridge front-end user interfaces with robust backend services.


• Proven experience of multi-tier architecture, how a front end, APIs, identity provider and several heterogeneous databases fit together securely, documented well enough for a team to build within.


• Excellent SQL and PL/SQL, hands-on with both Oracle and PostgreSQL.


• Experience deploying and operating multi-tier applications on Windows Server VMs, and securing them with SSO/IAM (Keycloak, OAuth2/OIDC) and role-based access control.


• Fluency in English and Greek.

• Docker, CI/CD pipelines, and containerized deployment.


• Maritime or shipping domain experience.


• ERP integrations and workflow automation.
