What we do

We are a team of data scientists, developers, researchers, and creatives working together on critical issues facing our society today. We are developing a series of cutting-edge products, as well as providing consulting services, working for the public sector and charities. Our key aim is social impact and doing good through our work. Our research work spans multiple policy areas, including education, health and social care, housing and homelessness, the environment, public finance, and international development, among others.

Our diverse staff combines decades of experience in economic and social research at the highest levels with the ability to develop state-of-the-art tech tools and powerful communications.

We work with some of the most forward-thinking organisations in the voluntary, public and private sectors. Our clients include most UK government departments, the Welsh Government, the Scottish Government and we also work with major supranational organisations including the World Bank, UNICEF, and the European Commission, as well as a number of national governments across the globe.

Who we want to work with

As a Senior Data Analyst at Alma Economics, you will take the lead in designing and delivering high-impact analytical solutions that support and shape how our organisation operates. You will be responsible for driving complex analytical projects, strengthening our automation and data infrastructure, as well as ensuring leadership has the insights needed to make informed strategic decisions.

In this role, you will work closely with different teams across the organisation to continuously improve how data is used to interpret operational needs and communicate them effectively across the business. You will be a core member of a talented international team working on cutting-edge ideas and not just legacy systems.

You’ll collaborate closely with teams across the organisation, helping turn sometimes messy questions into clear analysis and practical solutions. At the same time, you’ll be part of a highly skilled team, having the chance to learn from some of the best people in the field and continue growing your own expertise.

It’s a role with real accountability, lots of opportunity to build cool things, and the space to develop — both personally and within the team — as the function continues to evolve.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead end-to-end analysis of complex datasets to identify trends, issues, and opportunities for operational improvement.
  • Understand and utilize data pipelines and automation systems, to build analytical tools using Python and SQL.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of internal data products, including writing clean, well-structured code and lead reviews.
  • Integrate analytical outputs into internal tools and support the design of new system features.
  • Develop high-quality dashboards and data products to support operational and strategic decision-making.
  • Communicate findings clearly and confidently to senior leaders and colleagues across technical and non-technical teams.
  • Collaborate with departments to understand operational needs and translate them in actionable tasks.
  • Promote best practices around documentation, data governance, and reproducible workflows.
  • Apply advanced analytical and statistical techniques to solve complex organisational and policy challenges.
  • Play a key developmental role by identifying, evaluating, and integrating new tools, technologies, and analytical approaches that strengthen organisational capability.
  • Deliver training, coaching, and upskilling sessions to internal teams, enabling them to confidently apply analytical solutions.

Requirements

Essential

  • Previous experience as a senior data analyst or a similar senior position.
  • Proficient in Python, SQL, including experience building robust analytical workflows and automation.
  • Strong ability to analyse, interpret and model complex datasets.
  • Comfortable collaborating and communicating with multidisciplinary teams (e.g., developers, researchers, client-facing teams, operations).
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality analytical outputs.
  • Experience with version control (e.g., Git) and writing clean, maintainable code.
  • Good working command of English.

Desirable

  • Experience introducing or evaluating new analytical tools, methods, or automation approaches to improve efficiency and capabilities.
  • Knowledge of software development practices such as code reviews, testing, and documentation.
  • Experience in a consultancy or advisory environment, providing analytical guidance to clients or internal partners.
  • Experience with dashboards and data visualisation tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, or equivalent).

Working arrangements

You will have the opportunity to make a significant contribution to the work we do from day one.

Alma Economics is a friendly and informal place, and our offices are designed for both work and play. Our team consists of enthusiastic and talented individuals, who love learning and are always ready to support others.

We do not have a one-size-fits-all WfH policy. Most staff members work from home for one or two days during a typical week, while it is also possible to arrange to WfH for more extended periods (e.g., 2-4 weeks) to visit family or travel.

While most staff work 5-day weeks, for most full-time positions we also offer the option of a 4-day working week, either from day one or as an arrangement employees can transition into later in their Alma career.

Our offices can accommodate disabled access, and we are committed to providing all necessary support to colleagues who require it, but we are also happy to consider remote working arrangements for applicants with disabilities or health conditions that prevent them from working on-site.
